In 1970 Mr.W.L.J.Perera entered into the feed manufacturing business. He started New Barnerds Animal Feeds (Pvt.)Ltd in 1983 and built a feed manufacturing unit at Udubaddawa, a rural area in the North Western Provence in Sri Lanka. The factory began its commercial production in 1993.
Mr.W.L.J.Perera pioneered the concept of modern marketing in rural areas quite successfully. He organized farmers’ meets to study and analysis problems in the market. NBAF helped the farmers in the preparation of project reports for obtaining financial assistance from banks, provided round-the-clock veterinary services. NBAF also provided technical assistance to the poultry farmers. They engage in disease diagnosis and treatment, sanitation, disinfection, water treatment
The company is a case study on successful implementation of integrated rural marketing and its impact on rural growth. Long before the pundits of rural marketing could visualise its impact on the agrarian society, NBAF was practising rural marketing which provided round-the-year profitable rural self-employment to the rural agriculturists and checked their migration to urban areas.

Dr.Leslie Bernard Perera, is the son of late Mr. W.L.J. Perera, the founder Director of New Bernards Animal Feeds (Pvt) Ltd, and he is an old boy of St; Joseph College, Colombo. He started his IT education in Australia, There he followed a course on Marketing information system. After completion of these education programs, in Australia, he returned to Sri Lanka and proceeded with IT education under National Institute of Business Management (NIBM)
Dr. Leslie has followed Modern Hatchery management and Modern Breeder farm management under IPC livestock (Braneveli) in Netherlands.
His sole ambition is to drive the company into modern technology and to provide a better service to the nation.
